We celebrated the 2019 Fair Housing Month with a new art contest!
The theme was “WHAT DOES A DIVERSE, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY LOOK LIKE TO YOU?” and we were impressed by the creativity and thoughtfulness of the 18 adult entries and 7 youth entries. Submissions came from artists who exhibited work during Fair Housing Month, workshop participants, ONE Arts Center program participants, and community members.
The winners in the adult division are:
- 1st: Odin Perez with “The Crumbles”
- Artist’s Statement: “The black and white cookie is a Seinfeld cultural reference as the cookie that brings people together. Here the cookie depicts an inclusive community of people celebrating. Breaking bread or other food stuffs brings people together. History and culture bind us as well as drive wedges. Inclusivity is a process that includes conversing about our commonalities and differences.”
- 2nd: Cristina Clarimon with “Home/Nest”
- Artist’s Statement: “It’s a house. It’s a nest. It’s a cocoon. It’s about finding the right home for your needs. It’s difficult. There are lots of obstacles to overcome.”
The winners in the youth division are:
- 1st: Jasper, age 7, with “Sports Community”
- Artist Statement: “This is a community that has different people and different is OK. They are all happy to play sports together.”
- 2nd: Nori, age 5, with “Families of the World”
- Artist Statement: “This is a picture of the world and these are all the families of the world from all different countries.”
The adult winners received cash prizes and the youth winners received art supplies, all provided by our contest partner, the UVM Community Development & Applied Economics Public Communication Capstone class. The winning art will be featured in a future statewide Fair Housing public service campaign.
The contest is sponsored by the Fair Housing Project of the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, with the support the UVM Department of Community Development & Applied Economics.
